Colin Dickinson, a New Zealand representative track rider from the 1950's, opened V.I.C. Cycles in Lower Hutt in 1979. Through pure determination and hard work the business grew quickly with Margaret, Colin's wife, joining him at the shop and staff being employed.
The store expanded from what is now the middle section of the shop and alterations were undertaken to increase the storage area to accommodate the introduction of Mountain Bikes. At the end of the 1980's Colin and Margaret were ready to retire and pursue other interests.
Bruce McCardle and wife Fiona purchased V.I.C. Cycles in May 1990 and along with their dedicated team have always been comitted to maintaining the high standards set by the store's first owners.
Through the years V.I.C. Cycles has adapted to changing times and continually looked for ways of raising the bar. Our positioning statement Experience In Motion encapsulates a business that is always moving forward and continues to be a market leader providing bicycles, bike parts, accessories and service to a very discerning and loyal customer base.
What Does V.I.C. Stand For?
A question that is often asked, V.I.C. is the initials for the Variety Importing Company. Similar to the old D.I.C. Department store on Lambton Quay - (Direct Importing Company) that is now the Harbour City Retail Centre.
The Variety Importing Company had a store at the intersection of Connelly and High Streets and Melling Road, where the converted Levene retail store that now houses the Contact Energy Building is located. The Variety Importing Company shipped it's goods up the Hutt River by lighters from Wellington, landing just north of the present Melling Bridge. The bend in High Street was therefore known as V.I.C. Corner.
